The Best of Twitter

At the end of last year, we learned we were getting the second stimulus check. We decided that we didn’t need most (if not all of it), so I called (read “texted”. I’m a millennial; I’m not calling anybody if I don’t have to) one of my best friends and asked the awkward questions: “Are they aware of anyone in our immediate friend group who need any money? Is anyone struggling right now?”

The answer was yes (if it was no, we wouldn’t be talking about it you see) and we learned that one of our friends was trying to get a divorce from her husband. We learned that her husband is a complete ass and emotionally abusive fucker and she was trying to get her and her daughter out. Of course, nothing in the world happens without money and with him threatening to bury her in legal fees and take their kid she was saving up. My rage ensued at this point.

Eventually, I calmed down to continue the conversation. The long and the short of it is we decided to start sending money until she hit her goal for the legal costs. We did this for a month. It came up randomly on Twitter where we were talking about sharing what we do in charitable giving/mutual aid. The funny thing is, I didn’t even bring it up. I talk to Moriah a bit and she brought it up.

If I only I knew where this was going when it started.

Well, that lead to other people reaching out and asking about it. Some wanted to help out. I checked in with my friend first and got the green light. Then shit got crazy.

First, Angela reached out and I thought that was very sweet of her and we were all good. If you have had the pleasure of speaking to Angela at any point, you would have know that it was NOT gonna go like that. The girl signal boosted it.

Imagine coming back from dealing with a VERY angry customer and glancing at Twitter to see this. 😱

My DMs were full. a bunch of people offering to help out someone they’ve never even met. That pretty much took my attention for the day. I think some stuff happened at work still, but I couldn’t tell you what it was. I spent my day on Twitter.

By the end of the day, PF Twitter had donated $625 to my friend. $625!!! In less that 12 hours. To someone they had/have never even met.

That combined with that I was able to send the next day ($1250) put her over for her legal fees.

The court date will likely be in the fall (courts are backed up due to Covid). She’s moving out once the lease is up. I do have a small e-fund for her just incase she needs more funds as well.

So, if you needed a moment in the craziness that is the world today to just hear something good and nice, I hope I helped with that. For me, this was one of those awesome moments in life that make you that maybe, just maybe, humanity has a shot in hell of making it.

  1. There is a very ugly side of PF Twitter but once you’ve blocked or muted all those guys, we have some incredible community left. It’s part of why I’m now four years into the Lakota Giving Project! And I’m looking forward to our planned book buying on June 1 for Quinisha’s book. I can’t preorder gifts unfortunately but I eagerly anticipate the day. I’m so glad your friend got some of the money needed, I just helped a relative through a similar nasty divorce and that support is so crucial. Don’t hesitate to holler if she needs more help.

    1. I have mostly blocked the other side of PF Twitter thankfully. Makes the timeline much happier and nicer. πŸ™‚ She would have left already, but with them having a daughter, things are complicated. Fingers crossed for fall. Thanks for reading!
