I Work To Live

Recently I had a one on one with someone in my industry. These are fairly common meetings, but this was the first time that I had met with this particular person. We had the usual small talk and pleasantries. Then she asked me if I loved my job. Answering this question at work is always potentially an issue. You see, I refuse to lie, and we all know how I feel. I am fine with this, but it can rub some the wrong way since a lot of people only seem to ask questions to validate their own opinions.

My answer? “I don’t love my job or work in general. I work to make enough to live how I want and this job allows it.” She thought this was hilarious in a good way. Apparently, she really likes her job, but she would not be doing it if she didn’t need to put food on the table. It’s kinda cool that she can admit it.

Normally I end up justifying this point of view. The amount of people who think that we live to work is sadly quite high in this country. I am firmly in the “work to live” camp and will never be changing that. Happy to meet others with the same mindset. 🙂

  1. It took me a while to find my way to this campground but I like it here! I know why I had to believe I loved to work for work’s sake, but I’m past that stage of life and like that it’s a reasonably decent way to get to where I want to go even if I don’t like actually working the job anymore.
