Is Money the Root of All Evil?

Is love of money the root of all evil? I was thinking about this the other day in a conversation with someone. Honestly, I do not believe so. Money can lead people down that path, but it is not the money that does it. Money at the end of the day is just a made-up concept. We decided that it has worth and so it does. Otherwise, it’s just pieces of paper and metal coins (or zeroes and ones in a computer). But money is not what makes things evil. It’s the power people get from it.

Whether it’s for themselves or over other people, power drive people to do some insane shit. Money is just the means to do that. Once you have enough power you are pretty much able to do what you want in this world. Yes, you may still have to face the consequences of your actions, but it typically takes much longer to get to that point, and you have a better chance of getting away with everything due to the support you are able to get on your side (lawyers, politicians, etc.). The money in and of itself is a means to an end. Power…that’s where the true evil lies.

These were just some random thoughts I was having. Needed something “simple” after last week. You know, like thinking about the root of evil in the world. Thank God I am in therapy. πŸ˜…

What are your thoughts on this? Is money evil? Is it power? Something else?

  1. The actual quote is from the Bible, I Timothy 6:10. It says “For the LOVE of money is the root of all evil…”. There is nowhere in the Bible that money is called evil. Its loving money above all else that gets you into trouble. As for power, it is just like money, it is neither moral nor immoral. It is amoral, it is neutral. And it can be used to do great good for others or to inflict great evil upon them. Unfortunately the evil use of power is what gets all the clicks and the press, the good use of power is usually overlooked. You’ve got some excellent random thoughts!

    1. Very true on that. We are inundated with the worse uses of pretty much everything nowadays and have to hunt for anything good going on in the world which is just depressing.
Thanks. My family typically stares at me when I have these kinds of thoughts. “That’s very interesting about the evils of the world, but we are trying to figure out lunch so…” πŸ˜‚
      Thanks for reading.
